OCEAN RIDGE, Fla. — Phyllis Anderson Callaway died on Oct. 30, 2016, 12 years to the day of the death of her husband Trowbridge Callaway III (Toby), her spouse of 40 years. Her death followed a long fought battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her son, William Trowbridge Callaway (Lynn), Yardley, Pa.; two daughters, Susan Callaway Stein (Taylor), Chattanooga and Leslie Anne Callaway, Delray Beach, Fla; three granddaughters, Carolyn, Rachael, and Meryl; and two step-granddaughters, Catherine and Emily. Born Feb. 22, 1936, in South Bend, Ind., Phyllis attended John Adams High School and Ball State University. She worked for the market research firm Elrick & Lavidge in Chicago until 1962, when she moved to Seattle to work at the World's Fair. Moving back to Chicago in 1964, she and Toby were married and in 1968 they settled in Lake Bluff, Ill. There Phyllis was active with Planned Parenthood, and served on the Board of the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest, Ill., and on the Woman's Board of the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, Ill. In 1979 she moved with her family to Delray Beach, Fla. Phyllis devoted much of her time to fundraising and served on the Boards of Wayside House (1991-2008) and Old School Square (1996 - 2002). She was on the Board of Trustees of Gulf Stream School (1982 - 1991), where she organized and served as the first President of the Parents' Auxiliary. Phyllis was a Trustee and Fellow of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (2004 - 2009), located in Hawaii and Miami, Fla. Recently she served on the Massachusetts General Leadership Council for Psychiatry. A memorial service will be held at the Gulf Stream School Chapel, Gulf Stream, Fla., on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, at 2 p.m. with a reception following at Gulf Stream Bath and Tennis Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Phyllis' memory to Gulf Stream School, 3600 Gulf Stream Rd., Gulf Stream, Fla., 33483 or to Wayside House, 378 NE 6th Ave, Delray Beach, Fla., 33483.
