Thomas Russell Betts, 76, a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012.

He moved to Baton Rouge 54 years ago to work in the marine transportation business: serving as southern regional manager of Cargo Carriers, a Subsidiary of Cargill, Inc. and later in management with Chotin Transportation.

Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 12pm till Memorial Service at 2pm conducted by Rev. Barry Hoekstra, of the First Methodist Church, in Alexandria, La.

Tom graduate from John Adams High School in South Bend, IN and earned a B.S. degree in business at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN where he was affiliated with Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and an honorary business fraternity and where he met Judi. In addition to his work in the marine industry, he was an entrepreneur who established several diversified business.

He and his wife, Judi, were partners in two art-related companies: Aquarelle Press and Aquarelle for Creative Minds. He also served as a professional deep sea diver and was a co-owner of the long standing RAMA Restaurant, the first Thai restaurant in South Louisiana. Tom was recognized for his special interest and expertise in plant materials, landscape design and outdoor water features. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and a Power Squadron member, and was passionate about animals, especially dogs.

He is survived by Judith Polivka Betts, his wife of 53 years; his sister Barbara and her husband David Baker of Bay Village, OH; a sister-in-law, Janet and her husband Chuck Curtis, of Savannah, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents George Russell and Pauline Taylor Betts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice .
