Coach Jerry Flanagan, 85, South Bend, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021 at his residence. He was born November 13, 1935 in South Bend to the late John William and Irene Mae (Tucker) Flanagan.

On February 9, 1963, he married Sharon (Gardner) Flanagan in Beck’s Chapel at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.

Jerry graduated from Adams High School in South Bend in 1954. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving active duty from 1955 to 1959. He later went on to play baseball for Indiana University and was nicknamed “South Bend Skinny”. He graduated from Indiana University in 1967. Jerry enjoyed his career as a teacher and a golf coach, spending his first 12 years in Danville, Illinois and the remainder in South Bend at Riley and Adams High Schools. Jerry was an avid golfer, bowler, and fisherman.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Sharon (Gardner) Flanagan; son, Patrick (Jessica) Flanagan of Mishawaka; son, Sean Flanagan of South Bend; daughter Megan (Sean) Campbell of Granger; grandchildren, Seth Campbell, Hope Campbell, Isabella Flanagan, Brady Flanagan, Mia Flanagan, Madison (Steve Schoen) Moretti, and Cole Moretti; and great grandchildren Ryker and Luke Schoen.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and his brother J Lee Flanagan.

Services with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Palmer Funeral Homes-Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road South Bend. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Palmer Funeral Homes and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
