Robert C. Shields, a South Bend native, died at home on Monday, June 16, 2014, of acute leukemia. Born to Dr. Roy and Marguerite Shields, Robert graduated from Adams High School and Northwestern University, where he was affiliated with Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.


After serving in the Army, Robert was employed at Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka. He fondly remembered his mentor, Don Gates, and his colleague, Vernelle Adams. While working for a Dodge division in Columbus, IN, Robert met and married his wife, Susan, in 1975.

In 1981, they joined with partners Nancy and John Nelson to open ComputerLand of Northern Indiana. Upon selling this business in 1998, Robert began his tenure of community service. He was twice president of the South Bend Museum of Art, was on the board of Elders at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church and served on the boards of the Studebaker Museum, Friends of the Snite, the South Bend Symphony and Family & Children's Center. For five years, he was a hands-on volunteer at Center for Hospice Care's Hospice House in Roseland.

Robert is survived by his wife, Susan; their son, Matthew (Melissa) and grandsons Dylan, Harrison, Booker and Carter of Fort Collins, CO; and their daughter, Lauren, of Brooklyn NY.

Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 7:30 pm Thursday, June 19, 2014 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Memorial services will be 11:00 am Friday, June 20, 2014 in Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 Francis Street, South Bend.
