SOUTH BEND - John C. Steinmetz, a South Bend native, died at his home in Lighthouse Point, Florida on Monday, October 16th.

He was born to Clara (Peters) and William J. Steinmetz, and was preceded in death by brother, William R. Steinmetz, son-in-law Greg Nash, daughter Carol Steinmetz Nash, and sisters, Jean Hahn and Joan Sanders.

He is survived by sister, Virginia Haley; children, Karen J. Livingston (John) and J. Cordell Steinmetz; grandsons, Jackson C. Livingston and John C. Livingston; many nieces and nephews; and companion, Wilma Karst-Steinmetz.

John graduated from Adams High School in 1954 and received a B.S.M.E. from Purdue University in 1959 where he was affiliated with Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He enlisted in the Army in 1958, serving primarily in Japan. Soon after graduating from Purdue he began his long career with Midland Engineering Company.

Working through the ranks he became President of the firm in 1974 and retired as Chairman of the Board in 2003. Throughout his time at Midland Engineering, he was heavily involved in various trade organizations, serving as President of the Indiana Subcontractors Association, Chairman of the Michiana Area Construction Industry Advancement Fund, and as an Officer and Director of the Michiana Builders Association. John loved to play golf, play the horses, and play with words. He enjoyed a dry martini, good jazz, and a well-timed joke.
