Robert Lee Swintz

Robert Lee Swintz

Oct. 10, 1936 - July 10, 1997

On Thursday, July 10, I found my dad, Robert L. Swintz, in our new home at 60106 Copper Pointe Drive. He had died from a massive coronary attack earlier in the afternoon.

He was loved by so very many people in South Bend. He wasn't my biological dad, but he loved and cared for me more than any other person in my life. He was always there for me, as well as for his own biological children, Myra Leann Swintz and Robert Lee Swintz, II.

He is also survived by his wife, my mom, Leann Swintz; his mother, Sally Ward Swintz; and four grandchildren, Nicholas, Katie, Matthew and Crissy Swintz.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lewlyn D. Swintz; and by a brother, William G. Swintz.

He truly had a heart of gold. He gave his love freely and generously to all of us, including to his extended family members, Sharon Pape and Deb Blastic Swintz, wife of Robert L. Swintz, II.

He was a teacher for 35 years in the South Bend Community School Corporation, spending the last and best 20 years at Washington High School teaching CAD drafting in the industrial arts department.

He touched the hearts of his students, colleagues, friends and family alike. After his retirement in June 1996, from the SBCSC, he found a new family of friends and colleagues as a realtor with The Prudential Dunfee real estate agency.

I am forever indebted to his love for me. He raised me as his own child. He never missed an orchestra concert or soccer match, and he encouraged me to always be myself. He instilled confidence in me, and beamed with pride at each of my accomplishments.

I can honestly say I am the person I am today because of him and my mom. Our family was the center of my dad's life, and my mom was the center of his universe. He felt he found his true life's partner and love with her. He will be forever missed by all of us.

---- With love and devotion from your daughter, Monica Swintz.

My father was born on Oct. 10, 1936, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3718 S. Michigan Street. The memorial service will be held at noon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Robert L. Swintz, Washington High School Memorial Scholarship Fund.
