Condolences

SOUTH BEND - Don C. Sappington, 90, passed away at Memorial Hospital at 11:35 pm on January 26th, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Don was born in South Bend, IN, to Milo and Marguerite (Brandt) Sappington, who preceded him in death. Don was also preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Margaret (Bango) Sappington, his daughter, Margo Amodeo, and brother, Erwin Sappington, all in 2016. Others who preceded were brothers, Robert, Milo, and special longtime friend, Dr. Ed Packard.

Don attended John Adams High School and served in the Air Force during WW II, which started his love of airplanes. Don and Margaret married in South Bend on January 10th, 1948, after Don returned from Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force. Together, they owned an antique shop. Don also worked for the E.M. Morris family for many years. In retirement he enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled aircraft, working on cars. He was exceptionally talented at building anything. He belonged to the South Bend Radio Control Club, Michiana Brits Car Club, and the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

In his younger years, he enjoyed summers living at Eagle Lake, and loved sailing. He most loved spending time with family. Survivors include a brother, Howard (Pat) Sappington, South Bend, sister-in-law, Brenda of Edwardsburg, MI, daughter, Carla (Michael) Kaczynski, Osceola, grandsons, Joshua (Tasia) Bailey, Scotts Valley, CA, Nicholas (Sara) Kaczynski, twin granddaughters, Karissa of Osceola, and Cassandra of Madison, AL, great-grandchildren, Maddux and Trinity of Scotts Valley, CA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Don left this world a much loved man.

The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Chris Hall and Dr. Thomas Poulin for their kind and exceptional care and Dr. Joseph Coselli, Houston, TX, for giving us an extra 20 years with our beloved “Buppa.”.

Honoring Don's wishes cremation will take place and private family services will be held. Zahoran Funeral Home is assisting with the family with arrangements.
