Condolences

SOUTH BEND - Judy Collins Owens, known as Ms. Judy, passed on March 1, 2017 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Ms. Judy was a lifelong South Bend resident, born on July 27, 1961. Judy covered the entire gamut of womanhood. She was a tremendous daughter, sister, wife, mother, niece, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Who could ask for more?

She was the daughter of Spandward and Alease (Murphy) Mitchem. She was married on September 12, 1987 to Freddie “Big O” Owens. Their marriage produced daughters, Alisa Owens and Rebecca Owens, both of South Bend. Judy's beloved son, Freddie Owens, Jr., preceded her in death, as did her mother, Alease. Judy was a doting grandmother to Dakota Owens-Adams and R.J. Owens-Adams.

Judy was a loyal sister to Rick “Juice” (Kathy) Mitchem, Ron “Big Pretty” Mitchem, and Lynn “Trooper” Mitchem. Her nieces and nephews include Rochelle Smith, Ronald Mitchem, Hannah and Denzel Mitchem, and Linnea Vance (Vince).

Ms. Judy was an East-sider, attending McKinley, Jefferson and Adams. She was on the pom squad at Adams and continued her loved of dancing, as she was always “popping” her fingers. Judy was well known for her cooking. Her fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and German chocolate cake were unmatched.

She loved to fish, and excelled at it, although she was known as the “Queen of the Phantom Bite.” If you knew Judy, you would know she was aware of your birthday and address, as she used all information to get an edge on playing her daily numbers. We all shared when she won.

Funeral services for Judy will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Palmer Funeral Home-West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN 46628. Pastor Terrell Jackson of Laymon Chapel, CME Church, will preside. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00-11:00am on Saturday at the funeral home.
