Martha A. Melander – South Bend, Indiana, Martha passed away October 14, 2012 after a life-long struggle with diabetes.  Martha taught art in the Chicago area schools.  Art was her passion as well as children and family, especially her nieces and nephews.  Martha loved to travel and read.

SOUTH BEND - Martha Ann Melander passed away after a "courageously" fought lengthy illness. Martha was born February 20, 1956, in South Bend, Indiana, to Harry B. and Dorothy A. (Swanson) Melander.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harry, and grandparents, Ernest and Hilma Melander, and Richard and Anna Swanson.

She is survived by her mother, Dorothy of South Bend; sister, Carol (Ray) Erickson of Chicago, IL; and a brother, David (Louise) Melander of Mishawaka, IN. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Anna, Axel and Elin Erickson, and Jordan and Jared Melander.

Martha graduated from John Adams High School, South Bend, and North Park University, Chicago, Illinois. She lived in Chicago for several years and taught art in the Chicago area schools. Art was her passion as well as children and family, especially her nieces and nephews. She also loved to travel and read.

Martha was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of South Bend, Indiana, where she served as card secretary. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 pm Friday, October 19th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. A committal service will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, October 20th, at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. A memorial service will follow on Saturday at 11 A.M. at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 3025 E. Edison Road, South Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Evangelical Covenant Church, 3025 E. Edison Road, South Bend, IN 46615; or to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, 200 South Park Road #100, Hollywood, FL 33021.
