James "Jay" Zych

August 12, 1972 - November 3, 2025

James "Jay" Zych, 53, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away suddenly in St. Louis. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Patricia and Ed Zych, and grew up in South Bend, Indiana.

Jay was known for his humor, kindness, and the way he could light up any room. He had a generous spirit, a sharp wit, and a deep love for his family and friends. His presence brought warmth and laughter wherever he went, and his sudden passing leaves a space that can never be filled.

Jay was one of the sharpest litigation attorneys in the Midwest, respected for his brilliant judicial mind and his unwavering dedication to his craft. His intellect and passion made every discussion engaging-especially family dinner "conversations," which were always lively and unforgettable.

He was also very fond of his "dad joke" humor and made it a point to wedge it into any conversation. Jay could share the most profound observation and follow it with a perfectly timed joke, balancing wisdom with wit. He took pride in his many sayings and metaphors-some that made you pause and think, and others that made you roll your eyes and laugh at their simple humor. It was his way of keeping things light-perhaps even a humble way to disguise the fact that he was often the most intelligent person at the table.

Outside of his professional life, Jay had a profound love for music. He found joy and creativity in playing his guitar and producing tracks in his home studio, where his techno music station became a favorite pastime. Music was an outlet for his energy and imagination, and his talent for creating it reflected the same intensity and focus that shaped every part of his life.

Above all, Jay loved his family. He took joy in being involved in every part of their lives and cherished the time they spent together. He was endlessly proud of his children-Brendan, Hayden, and Zoe-and when he spoke about them, his face would light up with happiness. He was well traveled and relished the many vacations they shared, creating memories that will live on forever in the hearts of those he loved most.

Jay is survived by his three beloved children, Brendan, Hayden, and Zoe Zych, and their mother, Christine Zych. He is also survived by his siblings, Ed (Christy) Zych, Kerri Zych, Chris Zych, and Rhett (Jessica) Zych. Jay was a proud uncle to Hank and Samantha Zych, Grayson Zych, and Christopher and Alejandro Zych, all of whom will cherish his memory. He will be deeply missed by his extended family and many dear friends.

Jay made his home in St. Louis, where he built a life filled with laughter, stories, and love. His legacy lives on in the joy he shared, the connections he built, and the deep affection of those whose lives he touched.

Jay could make you think, make you laugh, and make you feel loved-all in the same breath. His humor, intellect, and heart will continue to remind us not to take life too seriously, but to cherish it completely.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 7, from 4-8 pm at Bopp Chapel. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 8 at 10 am at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church.
