SOUTH BEND - Lois Kathryn Vascil, 88, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Lois was born on October 5, 1928, in South Bend, to Bernhardt L. and Lily K. (Kreidler) Callsen. On August 28, 1948, she married Albert E. Vascil. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, Michael Vascil.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathy (Rob) Sweeney II; son, Chris (Niki) Vascil; grandchildren, Jill Sweeney (Chrissy), who was Lois' caregiver for over five years, Elissa Sweeney, Maclin Sweeney, Melissa (Todd) Neely, Miranda Vascil, Sadie Kunze, Austin Kunze, Shawn Chavez and Michael Vascil; great-grandchildren, Rhyanne and Keagan; half sisters, Barbara Myers and Deborah McNeil.

Lois was a lifelong resident of South Bend and graduated from John Adams High School. In 1947, she was chosen Miss U.S.S. Wright for the commissioning of the aircraft carrier. She supported her children's activities; involved in PTA, and as a Cub Scout Leader and Campfire Leader. Lois had a love of dogs and every stray animal that was brought home, guinea pigs, cats, ducks and rabbits. She enjoyed making crafts and beautiful floral arrangements.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 28, from 4 to 6 p.m., with funeral services at 6 p.m., in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A family burial will be on Thursday, June 29, at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.

In lieu of flowers, Lois' wishes were that memorial contributions be made to Pet Refuge Inc., 4626 Burnett Dr., South Bend, Indiana 46614.
