Edward Joseph "Joe" Barnes, 77, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. Joe was born to parents Edward J. Barnes Sr. and Marie (Helm) Barnes in Mishawaka, Indiana on October 27, 1935. Both precede him in death.

His beloved sister Mary Alice Lynch resides in Royal Oak, Michigan. Joe is also survived by four children: Debra, Wendy, Matthew, and Douglas (Wendy).

Joe attended John Adams High School and graduated in 1953. After graduation he served in the US Navy and attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He later graduated from IUSB in 1968.

In addition to living in South Bend at Cardinal Nursing and St Paul's Independent Living, Joe lived at Whispering Pines in Mishawaka, Indianapolis, and Inverness, California. Before retiring in 1994, Joe was the Education Director at the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies in Indianapolis. Prior to that he worked at the South Bend Tribune and the American Animal Hospital Association. Joe enjoyed reading, playing golf, and watching sports including his beloved Chicago Cubs.

Joe's family would like to express their gratitude to Real Services, Milton Adult Day Services, St Paul's Independent Living, and Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation's Auguste Cottage Memory Care Unit for all of their care and support.

Arrangements are being handled through Palmer Funeral Homes-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend Indiana. No services will be held. Cremation has taken place and internment will be at the St Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Indiana during a private graveside service.
