Rex M. Edwards, age 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at his home.

Rex was born in South Bend on September 14, 1932, to the late Weldon Edwards and Sarah (Matthews) Syson. He was raised by his devoted stepfather, George Britton Syson, from whom he learned lifelong values of hard work and integrity.

Rex graduated from John Adams High School in 1951.

Rex proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a commitment that reflected his respect for faith, country, and service to others. Throughout his working years, he owned and operated a furniture store as well as a carpet and upholstery cleaning service, earning the respect of many through his strong work ethic and honesty. Known for his warm personality, Rex had a way of making people feel comfortable, and many customers quickly became friends.

On December 13, 1952, in South Bend, Rex married the love of his life, Margaret Granat. Together they shared 73 years of marriage—a true testament to their unwavering devotion, care, and enduring love for one another.

Rex was a devoted family man who treasured time spent with those he loved most. He held a deep and personal devotion to God, while living a life grounded in love for his family, his country, and the natural world. An avid fisherman, he found peace and joy on the water. He was also a talented and creative artist who enjoyed painting, sketching, and gourd painting. Generous with his gifts, Rex frequently donated his artwork to help raise funds for his church and various charitable causes, quietly giving back to the community he cared for so deeply.

Rex is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Edwards; his daughter, Karen Edwards (Michael Hook); his grandchildren, Sarah (Colin) O’Connor and Grant (Cameron Andrews) Merrill; his great-grandson, Timothy; and his half-brothers, Terry and Michael Syson.

A memorial visitation for Rex will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Interment will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Lakeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
