Stephen Elek, Jr.

August 6, 1933 - Feb. 28, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Stephen Elek, Jr., 84, passed away February 28 in Memorial Hospital from complications following a recent fall.

Visitation will be TODAY, Friday, March 3 from 4-7 pm at the McGann Hay University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd., near Ironwood, with a Parish, K of C 3rd & 4th Degree combined Holy Rosary being prayed at 4 pm in the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Parish, Lakeville, IN. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery next door to the church.

Steve was born in Jefferson, Michigan to the late Stephen and the late Julia Elizabeth (Nemeth) Elek. He married the love of his life, Anna Louise Horwarth on December 26, 1953 in South Bend; she is left to cherish his memory here in South Bend. Their union was blessed with nine children to share his memory. They are six daughters and two sons: Kenneth (Linda), Christine (Christopher), Daniel (Ann), Deborah (Tim), Susan (Peter), Anne (Will), Cheryl (Dan), and Angela (Michael). A sister, Janice Hippe, 26 grandchildren, and 8-great-grandchildren are also blessed with memories of Steve.

He was a 1951 graduate of John Adams High School. In 1960 he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. He was an Industrial Engineer at Bendix/Allied/Honeywell. Steve served honorably during the Korean War in the U.S. Army.

A devoted Catholic, he was a 3rd Degree member of Santa Maria Council 553, and a 4th Degree member of Fr. J.A. Nieuland Assembly and the Serra Club. Other memberships were Michiana Amateur Radio Club, Atari Club, American Legion, Notre Dame Alumni Association, and Bendix Management Club; and he was a volunteer for the Friends of the St. Joseph County Library and a football usher at Notre Dame football games.
