Nanette J. Orzech (Bothast)

Nanette J. Bothast "Nancy"

Sep. 28, 1932 - Nov. 13, 2009

SOUTH BEND - On Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. the world lost one of its "better angels" with the passing of Nanette Jean (Orzech) Bothast. She passed away at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. while visiting her sister, Mary F. Lash of Gibsonia, PA.

Nanette was born September 28, 1932, in Michigan City, IN, to John A. Orzech and Elnor M. (Rist) Orzech. They moved to South Bend in 1940. She graduated from John Adams High School in 1951. On January 29, 1955, she married John R. Bothast, who preceded her in death on March 4, 1986.

Together, they owned and operated Buschbaum's Pharmacy from 1973 until 1986 at which time she continued the operation until January 1988. She worked at J.C. Penney from 1988-1995. She was currently employed at Memorial Hospital Gift Shop where she had also been active in the Hospital Auxiliary since 1995.

She is survived by her sister, Mary F. Lash of Gibsonia, PA; her son, Steven J. Bothast (Anyce) of South Bend; and her daughter, Susan J. Lee (Bill), also of South Bend. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica M. (Bothast) Hammad (Kareem), Thomas S. Bothast and John T. Lee.

Nancy loved to travel, knit and crochet, and shop. She enjoyed eating out and meeting up with many loving and loyal friends whom she'd known since high school. They especially enjoyed those special excursions to New Buffalo. She enjoyed the annual bet with her sister about who would win the Old Oaken Bucket since family consists of both Purdue and I.U. graduates. She enjoyed her dogs and would spoil them rotten.

Most importantly, she was a special sister, a loyal friend, and loving daughter, wife and mother. She never had a bad thing to say about anyone, and family and faith meant everything. She dealt with health issues with her husband and herself for many years, but she remained positive and never felt sorry for herself. She was a mighty spirit in a very petite package. She was a shining light in our lives and she will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be held today from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, where Nancy had been a member for the last 40 years. Visitation will also be one hour prior to Mass Wednesday in church.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association , 6100 W. 96th Street, Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46278; or to the ASPCA, 424 E. 92nd Street, New York, NY 10128-6804.
