Kay Lynn Chavis, 70, residing on Anderson Road, Granger, Ind., passed away at 7:58 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Bettendorf, Iowa, as the daughter of Earl Lamar and Kathryn (Shannon) Birmingham, and had lived in this community most of her life.

On Dec. 4, 1954, in Plymouth, Ind., she married Eugene L. Chavis. Next month, Kay and Gene would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

She is survived by her loving husband, Eugene; two daughters, Kathryn (Andy) Smith of Mishawaka, Ind., and Karen (Jeff) Wesolek of South Bend, Ind.; a son, Keith Chavis of South Bend; and four grandchildren, Holly Smith of Richmond, Va., Kobe, Keegan and Kassidy Wesolek, all of South Bend.

Kay was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and a friend to all. She was employed part-time at Mary Frank School in food service, and served as a motor carrier with the South Bend Tribune for 25 years. She graduated from John Adams High School in 1952 and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Chicago, Ill. She was a huge Notre Dame basketball fan.

Services for Mrs. Chavis will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 7, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. today in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations honoring the life of Kay Lynn Chavis be made to Pet Refuge, 2300 W. 6th St., Mishawaka, IN 46544.
