Carlson - Richard, died peacefully on October 9, 2017 surrounded by his sons.

Born December 15, 1931 in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Carl Maurice and Evangeline Ludlum Carlson.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley June, sons, Clifford Wendell (Kathy), Brian Paul (Shannon), and Eric Blake (Chris Seelig), and grandchildren J.R. Allen, Anna Catherine, Blake Prentice, Mary Megan, and Anna Murphy Carlson, a great-grandson, Jaxson Allen, a sister, Sue LaBrash, nieces, Karen Bettner, Deb Holbrook, and a nephew, John LaBrash.

A graduate of Wabash College, McCormick Theological Seminary, and the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, Dr Carlson served churches in Chicago, Wilmette, and Robinson Illinois. From 1972 until 1984, he was pastor of the Springdale Presbyterian Church in Louisville. He had a ministry of marriage and family therapy from 1984 until his retirement in 2010. In retirement, Dr Carlson did graduate work in advanced creative writing at UofL and published his first novel, Plum Tree, in 2012.

Active in issues of social justice, he was a board member of the Family Services Center in Wilmette, IL, a member of the Chicago Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, worked with Msgr. William Quinn, with whom he shared pulpits, on open housing in Broadview and Maywood IL. He was chair of Religious Leaders for Fairness in Louisville, a frequent speaker on behalf of LBGTQ rights, and a leader in the Presbytery of Mid-Kentucky on behalf of all persons who had a call to ministry regardless of sexual orientation. Recently he has been involved in a ministry with ex-offenders, an outreach mission of the Christian Church (Disciples) "Ministry Behind the Bars."

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October, 21, 2017 at Springdale Presbyterian Church at 2 pm.
