Lieutenant Commander Robert (Bob) Hicks, USN, ret., of Clearwater, Florida sailed away to his heavenly home on December 1, 2020. Bob was born in South Bend, Indiana on January 20, 1932, the son of Riley and May Hicks.

He is a graduate of John Adams High School in South Bend, Indiana and the University of Nebraska. He was a devoted member of the First Lutheran Church in Clearwater, Florida. A Navy veteran of 26 years, upon his retirement he was serving in the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C., directing the Navy’s Limited Duty and Warrant Officer programs.

His military service included the Korean and Vietnam war eras and a variety of ships and shore stations, including the Aircraft Carriers “Yorktown” and “Intrepid”, the Minesweeper “Dash”, the Destroyer Tender “Everglades”, Joint Military Commands in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Omaha, Nebraska and Istanbul, Turkey, the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois, the Navy Recruiting Station at Chicago, Illinois and the Submarine Base at Pearl Harbor, as well as the Pentagon Annex in Washington, D.C.

While LCDR Hicks’ primary duty was serving in a variety of administrative operational positions, he also qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer and Officer of the Deck Underway and therefore was eligible to succeed to command at sea. He is the holder of several medals and awards, including the Navy Achievement Medal with 2 stars; Joint Service Commendation Medal, Unit Commendation Medal, Korean and National Defense Medals, as well as others.

Following his retirement from the Navy, Bob became Deputy for Personnel/Administrative Operations with the Pinellas County Florida Property Appraiser’s office, retiring from this position in 2007. He and his wife were world travelers and throughout their marriage traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad. An avid biathlete, he participated in running and biking events throughout the country, well into his 70’s. Other passions of his were gardening, Nascar races, country music and involvement in politics, having managed and participated in many Republican political campaigns. Bob was the quintessential family man, completely devoted to his family, who dearly love and will deeply miss him.

He is predeceased by his daughter Darryl, survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte, as well as granddaughter, Cerise Stephens, great-grandchildren, Conner and Caydence and brother, DuWayne Lee (Buzz) Hicks of South Bend, Indiana. His family is eternally grateful for the wonderful care and compassion provided by Suncoast Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to them.
