Lois Linden Messersmith

Lois L. Messersmith, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at 11:07 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Dujarie House, at Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame. She was 85 years old.

She was born December 2, 1924 in South Bend, a daughter of Albert & Erma L. (Seagraves) Gillen. Lois was employed as the first woman officer at Central State Bank in Lakeville where she worked for 21 years. She retired in 1982. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was a member and Past President of United Methodist Women, Timely Topics Circle, the Explorer's Sunday School Class, worked as Receptionist in the Church office, and served on several boards.

On January 19, 1944 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, South Bend, as Lois Gillen, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, William H. Messersmith. They enjoyed 61 wonderful years together until his passing on July 14, 2005. She was also preceded by a sister, June Downing.


Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 23, 2010 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Rev. Hosea Drake, former pastor of Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
