SOUTH BEND - William R. Steinmetz, chairman of the board of Midland Engineering Co., died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday in his home after an illness. He was 68.

Mr. Steinmetz joined the company in 1949 as a sales representative and was named chairman of the board in 1974. He remained in that capacity until his death.

He was chairman of the board of trustees of Memorial Hospital, and Memorial Health Systems from 1980 to 1986 and remained as the board's trustee emeritus.

He held presidential posts with the St. Joseph Valley Builders Exchange, 1955; the Indiana Roofing Contractors Association, 1956; the South Bend Chapter of Construction Specifications Institute, 1960; the South Bend Rotary Club, 1961-62; the South Bend Country Club, 1970-71; the National Roofing Contractors Association, 1973; and the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association, 1975.

He was also chairman of the board of the Roofing Industry Educational Institute and was on the board of directors of the South Bend Area Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana General Contractors Association and the Volunteer Trustees of Not-for-Profit Hospitals.

He attended the Citadel Military College, received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Purdue University in 1949. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was born Feb. 3, 1926, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. On May 8, 1954, in South Bend, he married Shirley Proudfit. She survives with a daughter, Janet Amphlett of Boston; a son, Bill Jr. of South Bend; two grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Haley of South Bend, Jean Hahn of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Joan Sanders of Ottawa, Ill.; and a brother, John of South Bend.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc. or William R. Steinmetz Fund, in care of Memorial Hospital.
