Domenick Catanzarite

Domenick Catanzarite, of South Bend passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022, at his home at the age of 95. He was born on July 22, 1926, in Ambridge, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Marian Catanzarite. Domenick moved from Ambridge to South Bend in 1933 where he attended then John Adams High School graduating in 1944. Domenick joined the United States Army in 1944 and completed his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky with the 193rd battalion. He was then deployed to Okinawa where he became a sergeant 1st class and tank commander. After his tour of duty in Okinawa, he was honorably discharged in 1946. After the military he enrolled at Acme Tool and Die design and graduated in 1947.

On October 22, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Charlene Parmley to whom he was married for 73 years. Domenick started work at Studebaker. In 1948 he moved to Uniroyal working as a design engineer in divisional new product development. Domenick worked on the project to develop the first passive air bag restraints in automobiles. He went on to work Plant Manager for Penz Tool and Ristance Corp. Domenick was co-founder and owner of American Steel Rule Die from 1991 to 2022.

Along with his wife, Charlene he is survived by his children, James (Elaine) Catanzarite of Tucson, AZ, Robert (Carol) Catanzarite of St. Joseph, MI, Don (Diann) Catanzarite of Granger, Christine Catanzarite and David (Mary) Catanzarite of South Bend, five grandchildren, Matthew Catanzarite, Michael Howlett, Melissa Lockamy, Allison Wallace, Nick Catanzarite and Luke Catanzarite and three great grandchildren Chloe Lockamy, Emery Wallace, and Domenick Wallace. He also leaves behind his brother, Joseph Catanzarite (Elsie). Domenick was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Theresa (Virgil) Wibbens, Catherine Catanzarite, brother, Pat (Betty) Catanzarite, and sister-in-law, Elsie Catanzarite (Joseph).

Domenick was devoted to his family and friends. The Catholic faith was a focal point for him. He and his family maintained a close relationship with C.S.C. Members and of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Domenick was elected to the parish council and a team member of the pre cana group. He was a Cub master and assistant scout master. He loved playing softball, basketball, bowling, and golf. He achieved two holes in one in his golfing career. He loved Notre Dame football and women’s basketball and hosted tail gate parties for over 12 years. Charlene and Domenick would join the Peczkowski, Stebbins and Carter families to spend winter months on South Padre Island for over 14 years and in Tucson, Arizona for the past few years.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 226 N. Hill St. South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. where a parish rosary will begin at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will also be on Friday at the church from 10:30 until the service begins at 11:00 AM

Memorial Contributions in Domenick’s honor may be made to Center for Hospice, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
