Maurice J. Hoban Sr., 78, of 205 North St. Louis Blvd., South Bend, IN, passed away following an extended illness on the morning of Saturday, July 23.

Maury was born on November 15, 1926, to the late Martin C. and Esther (Thornburgh) Hoban of the same address.

On August 24, 1957, in South Bend, Maury married Patricia J. Handshaw, who preceded him in death in January 1999. Together Maury and Pat raised six children, Maurice Hoban Jr. (Monica) of South Bend, IN, Bridget Hoban O'Meara (Tim) of Indianapolis, IN, Thomas X. Hoban of Chicago, IL, Peggy Hoban (Lionel Halvorsen) of Seattle, WA, John L. Hoban and Timothy K. Hoban, both of South Bend, IN. His nine grandchildren include Anna, Michael, Maura, Fiora, Sarah, Cody, Lizzy, Isaiah and Connor. Other close surviving relatives include nephews, M. Patrick Hoban and J. Michael Hoban, and a niece, Mary Hoban Ricci.

Maury was preceded in death by his brother, Martin.

Maury attended St. Joseph Grade School, South Bend, John Adams High School and Purdue University, where he earned a B.S. degree in pharmacy in 1950. On four occasions he won the title of Lightweight Boxing Champion at Purdue University. Maury's education at Purdue was interrupted while he spent two years serving his country in the Philippines during World War II.

Maury was a registered pharmacist and worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative for the Schering Corporation for 38 years. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Parish in South Bend. Maury was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians where he served as president for six years. He belonged to the American Legion and was past president of the Michiana Pharmaceutical Sales Association. He worked for many years as a Democratic precinct committeeman and was a member of the South Bend Elks Lodge #235, the YMCA, Stamp and Bridge Clubs, and the Viking Ski Club.

Visitation will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, in the McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road, where a Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, in St. Joseph's Church, South Bend, with burial following at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
