SPEEDWAY - Darwin Phillip Hoose, 84, died November 23, 2010.
He was born in South Bend, IN, on May 21, 1926.

He was a graduate engineer from Tri State University, Angola, IN, and worked 33 years for the Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors Corp. as a project engineer, retiring in 1988. He was a 50-year member of Speedway Masonic Lodge 729. He belonged to Murat Shrine, and was past president of the Reception Unit.

He also belonged to Scottish Rite, Police Club, Royal Order of Jesters, Order of Quelzalcoalli, Kentucky Colonels, Mobil Nobles, and was a past president of El Amen Nabeel.

He served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific 1944-1946 on USS LCSL#58 (Landing Craft Support Large), and was a member of the National Association of USS LCSL 1-130 Amphibious Forces. He was recalled by the Navy and assigned to Destroyer USS Arnold J. Isbell DD869 during the Korea Operation, 1950-1951. For the operation in WWII and Korea he received the following awards: American Campaign, Combat Action Ribbon (gold star), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign (2 stars), WW II Victory Navy Occupation, National Defense, Korea Service (1 star), United Nations Service Korea, Phillippines Liberation (2 stars), Korea Presidential Unit Citation, China Service, and a Phillippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge. He was a member of Speedway Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; sons, Phillip M. and Timothy J. Hoose; and granddaughters, Hannah and Ruby Hoose.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Conkle Funeral Home-Speedway, IN, with services on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Conkle Funeral Home-Speedway. Burial will be at Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend IN.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Hospital for Children, c/o Murat Center, 510 N. New Jersey St., Indianapolis IN 46204-1567.
