Raymond W. Shilt, 79, of 9077 Suter Road, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2005, at 4:47 a.m. in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home in Plymouth.

He was born February 1, 1926, in South Bend, to Cleao and Gertie (Wilson) Shilt.

Ray was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Plymouth. He graduated from South Bend Adams High School in 1944. In 1950, he graduated from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. He received his Master's Degree in education from Indiana University and his Master's Degree in math from south Carolina. He served his country in both World War II in the European Theater and in the Korean War at Aberdean Proving Grounds in Maryland.

On June 21, 1952, in Wells County, Indiana, Ray and Nova Cobb were married. They enjoyed 53 wonderful years of marriage.

Ray taught school in Three Oaks, Michigan. He and Nova served at Red Bird Mission, in Kentucky, by teaching and coaching and being dorm parents, for a great group of students for ten years. In 1966, they moved to Plymouth and joined Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ray taught Math at Plymouth High School. He was the Varsity Tennis Coach for ten years. He retired in 1988. Before and after his retirement, he helped with the school's athletics by announcing track meets, being a scorekeeper for basketball, helped at football games with the chains, announced wrestling, and sold tickets at various sporting events. Even after retirement he continued his support of "Big Red". He enjoyed playing golf, working in his workshop, watching the Bears and the Sox and supporting his grandsons with their activities.

He is survived by his wife, Nova; their daughter, Jean (and Charles) Hoover of Noblesville, Indiana; their son, Kenneth (and Sharon) Shilt of LaPorte, Indiana; their grandsons; Kevin (and Leah) Hoover, Joseph Hoover, and Benjamin Hoover, all of Noblesville, and Nathan Shilt of LaPorte; and his brother, Robert J. Shilt of Las Vegas.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Trinity United Methodist Church, Plymouth, with the Rev. William Kaster and Michael Burroughs officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, and thirty minutes before the service in the church.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Trinity United Methodist Church. One half of the memorial contributions will be given to the Red Bird Mission and the other half will be given to the church.
