SOUTH BEND - Frederick “Fred” P. Crowe Jr. passed away on Friday, February 10th, with Rosemary, his wife of 62 years, by his side. Fred was born in South Bend on June 12, 1928 to the late Fred P. Crowe, Sr. and Margaret (Cudahy) Crowe. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert and four sisters, Carol, Punky, Patty, and Joan.

He is survived by eight children: Ellen (James) Finan, Kevin (Julia) Crowe, Michael Crowe, Maureen (Kevin) Bower, Mary Benkie, Rosemary (Christopher) Rowland, Stephen (Elizabeth) Crowe and Thomas (Tamara) Crowe; twenty-eight grandchildren: Christopher (Anne) Wilmes, Eric (Vanessa) Wilmes, Daniel (Megan) Wilmes, Marta Wilmes, Matthew (Marnie) Crowe, Ryan Crowe, Timothy Crowe, Mary Ellen Crowe, Thomas Crowe, Emily Crowe, Nicholas Crowe, Michael Crowe, Megan (Eric) Tannenbaum, Erin (Nathan) Patterson, Kevin Bower, Brooke Benkie, Benjamin (Heather) Rowland, Meredith (Scott) Hurley, Bridget Rowland (Benjamin Heynacher), Elise Rowland, Alexander Rowland, Courtney Crowe, Jason Crowe, Kaitlyn Crowe, Chelsey Crowe, Gabriella Crowe, Kiersten Crowe, and Madeline Crowe; and ten great-grandchildren, Martin Wilmes, Mae Wilmes, Benjamin Wilmes, Reid Wilmes, Sophie Wilmes, Samantha Wilmes, Eli Tannenbaum, Riley Heynacher, Clara Patterson, and Gwyneth Patterson.

Fred graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1949 with a B.S. in Accounting. Shortly after graduating, he formed an accounting firm with Clete Chizek and Mendel Piser. Together, they built the firm up to a national practice. The firm is now known as Crowe Horwath and has thousands of employees across the country.

Fred was selected a Knight of Malta, the highest lay honor in the Catholic Church, and was a founder of a prison ministry at the state penitentiaries in Michigan City and Westville. In retirement, he volunteered as a development officer for Trinity School of Greenlawn for twenty years. He also was active in Dismas House, a post prison society re-entry program and was the founder of Project Future. In addition, he served on the boards of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Sisters of St. Francis, La Casa, and YMCA, and he served as chairman of the Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County. In 2014, he received the Jack Hickey Award from Dismas House for outstanding support to individuals returning from incarceration, and in 2008, he was selected to the South Bend Alumni Association South Bend Community Hall of Fame. He received the University of Notre Dame Award of the Year in 1988 from the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley, and he received the YMCA Service Award in 1970. He was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church and served on the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Council

Fred will always be remembered for his dedication to his faith and family, for his generosity, and for his love of Notre Dame. He cherished spending summer weekends with his large family at a lake cottage in New Buffalo and watching his beloved Chicago Cubs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Trinity School at Greenlawn, 107 S. Greenlawn Ave., South Bend, IN 46617; Casie Center, 533 N. Niles Ave., South Bend, IN 46617; or Dismas House of Michiana, Inc., 521 S. St Joseph St., South Bend, IN 46601.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 14, from 4-7pm with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 4pm at the McGann Hay, Funerals / Cremations / Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 15, at 11am, with visitation from 10-11am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rev. Paul Doyle, CSC officiating. Cremation will follow and he will be entombed at Cedar Grove Cemetery at Notre Dame.
