Elayne Shafer

Jun. 11, 1927 - Oct. 30, 1996

Elayne Shafer, 69, residing on Riding Mall, South Bend, Ind, passed away at 7:45 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, after an extended illness.

Elayne was a former registered nurse at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

She was born on June 11, 1927, in South Bend, to the late Adolph W. and Lila W. Graf. She had lived in the South Bend area all of her life.

On April 25, 1948, in South Bend, she married Forest R. ''Dick'' Shafer, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jennifer Shafer and Janet Pilarski, both of South Bend; four sons, Scott Shafer of Goshen, Ind., Thomas Shafer of Vancouver, Wash., James Shafer of South Bend and Jon Shafer of Kent, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Wilmetta Kelley of Franklin, Tenn. and Diane Cooper of South Bend.

A son, Michael Shafer, preceded her in death in 1949.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Gospel Center Missionary Church, South Bend. Rev. Warren Banks, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Osceola. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., today, at the Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and one hour prior to the services at the church, on Saturday.

Elayne was a member of the Gospel Center Missionary Church, a graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, and a former secretary and charter member of the Mothers of Twins Club in South Bend.

Memorial contributions may be given to the church, 930 S. 30th St., South Bend, IN 46615.
