SOUTH BEND – Don A. Payton, 62, of Honolulu, formerly of South Bend, died about 12:50 p.m. Thursday in the home of his sister in Tulsa, Okla., after an illness.

Mr. Payton retired in 1981 from the Federal Department of Labor as an enforcement officer for the state of Indiana and also retired in 1965 from the armed forces.

He was born Sept. 16, 1927, in South Bend. On Jan. 12, 1955, in Huenfeld, West Germany, he married Ingrid Kraus, who died in 1982.

He is survived by three sisters, Mary Alice Frantz of Bradenton, Fla., Kathryn A. Cosper of South Bend and Rita Klingberg of Tulsa; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be at noon Saturday in Highland Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

McGann Funeral Home, 2313 E. Edison Road, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
