James Victor Barcome

James Victor Barcome

Aug. 22, 1930 - Aug. 16, 2014

MISHAWAKA - James passed away on August 16, 2014 with his family by his side. Born on August 22, 1930 to Victor and Elizabeth (Hogan) Barcome. Elizabeth died shortly after James was born.

He was raised by his father and grandparents, Stephen and Parmellia Barcome, until the age of 10, when his father married Helen B. (Buck) Barcome. James retired from Bendix. He also held many other positions during his political career such as Comptroller for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, South Bend City Controller under Mayor Jerry Miller, City Councilman and Deputy County Assessor.

He was one of the many persons honored for building the Century Center; he also worked for Judge Peter J. Nemeth at the Juvenile Justice Center as his bailiff after his retirement. James received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor Evan Bayh and the key to the City of South Bend. Over the years he worked on many political campaigns for presidents, senators, governors and mayoral candidates and also ran for state representative.

During any campaign he knew exactly who to call in that district to help get the vote out and was always interested in who could do the most good for our city, state or country. His family and his political career was his life. He never knew a stranger. The last year, while he was at Michiana Health and Rehabilitation, he knew everyone's name he came in contact with including the employees and the residents, and always made friends where ever he went.

He will be missed by his loving family: his wife, Beverly Jean (Sherman) of 63 years; three children, Patti (Mark) Smith with whom he shared his birthday on August 22, Cathy (John) Deitsch, and Tom (Karen) Barcome; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Troy) Granata, Michael (Amanda) Marnocha, Amber (Matt) Heckaman, Justin (Gina Robertson) Zimpelman, Austin (Allie Qualls) Barcome and Erin Barcome; nine great-grandchildren, Joshua (Brittnay Rode) Marcus, Tyler (Britney) Marcus, Taylor Granata, Troy James T.J. Granata, Emily, Lauren and Zachary Marnocha, Scarlett and Mary Jane Heckaman; two great-great grandchildren, Kaylynn and Aden James Marcus and another great-great-grandchild on the way; one brother, William (JoAnn) Barcome and one sister, Jaqueline (Tim) Rumfelt.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff on the 4th floor IMU and the 6th floor Comfort Care at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka for all of their care and kindness to James and his family. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 21 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Matthews Cathedral, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Foundation Supporting Center for Hospice Care: South Bend-Elkhart-Plymouth, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545, or Knights of Columbus Council 5521, 61533 Ironwood Rd., South Bend, IN 46614.
