SOUTH BEND - Joseph B. Landy, Jr., 83, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 6:25 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Center for Hospice Care in South Bend, Indiana.

He was born November 29, 1929 to the late Joseph, Sr. and Beulah (Emery) Landy in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents, his son, Bruce Landy, and a sister, Dixie Landy also preceded him in death. Mr. Landy worked at Studebaker from 1949-1955 part of which he spent in the service.

In 1954 he worked with Notre Dame Medical Research Department where he had success in raising with a feeding team the first germ free mice raised in captivity for research. He later worked at Wheelabrator where he retired on August 1, 1995 after 32 1/2 years. He spent a few years working for the St. Joseph County Building Maintenance at the County City Building. Joseph received an Associate's Degree from ACME Industrial Electronics, and completed Ivy Tech's three year Electrical Apprenticeship Program.

On March 17, 1951, Joseph married V. Jene Forbes in Plymouth, Indiana. She survives. Along with his loving wife of 56 years, he is survived by one daughter, Diane Fairchild of Osceola, Indiana; two grandchildren, Tracie Lehman and Brian Fairchild; four great-grandchildren, Sydney Lehman, Max Lehman, Kegan Lehman, and Kain Fairchild; a sister, Linda (Ed) Dukes of Florida; and a brother, Larry (Jinx) Landy of Granger, Indiana.

Mr. Landy was a Charter Member of the Brethren Church Prince of Peace, member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #58, Experimental Aircraft Association (E.A.A.) #865 in Niles, Michigan, Board Member for Avian Companions of the Midwest, Past President of AKAWAHSIM camping club, Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) Past Vice Commander Chapter 6, and was an Usher for the University of Notre Dame.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he received a Good Conduct Medal. He served from June 26, 1951 - June 1953 and continued with Army Reserves until 1959. He belonged to the Harbor Craft Outfit-The Army's Navy. Joseph enjoyed camping, photography, and flying, and was an avid animal lover. He received his pilot's license in 1950. "My wife is my sweetheart and an angel too! Everyone should be as lucky as I have been!" The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Joseph's caregivers which include, Pricilla, Tina, Barbara, Tyler, Sande, Adrian, & Miranda. Also a special thank you to Dr. Bilal Ansari and his nurse Ruth.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brethren Church Prince of Peace, Center for Hospice Care, or Pet Refuge. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Kaniewski Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
