In Memory

Lola E. Bishop (Layman) - Class Of 1949

Lola E. Bishop (Layman)

LOLA LAYMAN (BISHOP)

September 16, 1930 - September 29, 2024

Lola E Layman, 94, born in South Bend, Indiana to Walter and Hazel (Seymour) Bishop on September 16, 1930, has passed this realm to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ peacefully while in memory care on September 29, 2024.

Lola was preceded in death by her husband Phil, her parents and four siblings, Kathryn, Charles, Mary and James.

Lola met her beloved husband Phillip Allen Layman in the third grade at Nuner JHS and married shortly after their Adams HS graduation. Both have lived their entire lives in River Park and celebrated 71 years of marriage. Together they raised five children, Jessica (Steven), Martin, Timothy (Clara), David (Angela), and Lisa (Brent). They gloried in their five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

During her time at John Adams HS, she was honored to be a cheerleader, a member of the Potawatomi Peaches women’s softball team, and was a proud Adam’s Glee Club member in the Triple Trio.

Besides raising a large family in River Park, attending countless sporting and music events of her children and grandchildren, Lola was an avid cook, and seamstress. She was a kind and caring neighbor, and friendships were loyal and long lived. She also worked outside the home as an administrative assistant to numerous law firms both in South Bend and Mishawaka.

Her life in Christ’s service was divided first with the People’s Church and then the Olive Branch United Brethren Church. Lola, a natural singer with an undaunted interpretive voice, was a self-taught pianist and organist. She served as the choir director and church service musician for over forty years at the People’s Church. Known for her no-nonsense approach to music-making her directive was always very clear, “It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does have to be sincere. If you don’t mean it or understand it, don’t sing it.”

She loved helping people and she loved to sing hymns.

Always kind, always a witness.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Sandridge Cemetery, Bourbon IN. Hahn funeral home has been entrusted to handle the final arrangements. To leave an online condolence or to share a memory, please visit www.hahnfuneralhomes.com.
