Albert “Al” Clark
May 17, 1929 - Dec. 17, 2020
SOUTH BEND, IN -
Albert Eugene “Al” Clark, 91, passed away peacefully December 17, 2020 surrounded by family at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. A lifelong Hoosier, he was born May 17, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Albert J. and Juanita Clark. He moved to South Bend as a young child and lived in the River Park area the majority of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charles Clark and sister, Jane Hillegas. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dixielee Moore, their daughter, Connie (James) Bartha of Oakland CA, son, Alan (Jan) Clark of Sleepy Hollow, IL and loving grandchildren, Nathan and Meghan Clark; and Al‘s daughters from a previous marriage, Cindy Kendricks of Lake Elsinore, CA and Sharon Leveque of Bremen, IN.

Al graduated from John Adams High School in 1947 and served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Alaska. He retired from Indiana Bell/AT&T after 40 years of service. He then worked as a telecommunication contractor at the University of Notre Dame football press box and basketball arena where he was fondly known as “Al the Phone Man” and “Big Al” standing proud at 5'5”. His love of Notre Dame was displayed in the car he drove, a gold Ford Taurus with “Mr. ND 1” license plates, which he proudly parked in front of the main gate of the stadium. He never got a ticket in South Bend.

As a younger man Al was involved in area softball and bowling leagues. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre and he and his partner Jan were family champions, and successful in local pool leagues. For decades, Memorial Day was spent at the Indianapolis 500 with his family. He was active in social organizations: as the Commander of American Legion Post 303 in River Park, Mishawaka Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2083, Elkhart Moose Club #599, and Patron of many neighborhood squirrels.
