Phyllis E. (Hertel) Nielsen
Phyllis E. (Hertel) Nielsen, residing in Mishawaka, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026. She was 97 years old.
She was born March 8, 1929, in South Bend, IN, daughter of Elmer & Mary Hertel.
On August 14, 1948, in South Bend, Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert W. Nielsen. They enjoyed over 70 years of marriage together. She is survived by her son Gregory (Diana) Nielsen of Plymouth and daughter Cheryl Nellis of Mishawaka, and stepson Noah Kaiser. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Elizabeth Nielsen of Osceola, her sister Carol (Brian) Hedman of Granger, her eight grandchildren Jason Nielsen, Fayette (Matthew) Flournoy, Adam Nielsen, Andrea Nielsen, Sarah (Mariah) Rumple, Kaitlin (Trey) Keyser, Cortney Nellis and Melanie Nellis. She had ten great grandchildren Graycie, Jossie, Daisy, Noah, Mieke, Bennett, Gavin, Mia, Hazlea, Brausin, Johnny and great great grandchild Luna. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, son Andrew of Osceola, son Peter (Valerie) of Walkerton, son-in-law Steven Nellis of Mishawaka, and brother Robert (Carolyn) Hertel.
Phyllis was a 1947 graduate of John Adams High School. Throughout her life she volunteered and held many jobs including the hospitality cart at Memorial hospital, H &R Block's office, Inspector for election day at the polls, and ran the accounts receivable office of Hass Wholesale Inc. But she is best remembered for many years managing the Coffee corner Deli and Atrium-Cottage Place gift shop at Memorial Hospital.
Along with everything else that she accomplished she also belonged to the Elks Club for many decades where she served on several boards. She also belonged to Zion UCC church where she was a lifetime member as well and served on many Committees and Boards there. She additionally belonged to many card clubs and even enjoyed bowling in a league.
Phyllis loved her family and life very much and lived it to its fullest. She loved cooking and playing cards. She enjoyed going on vacation with her family. Two of her favorite places were Frankenmuth, MI and Gatlinburg, TN.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
