Jack Eugene Michael

July 8, 1928 - Sept. 8, 2007

MISHAWAKA - Jack E. Michael, 79, of Mishawaka, IN, began life on July 8, 1928, in South Bend, the son of Harley and Tressa Michael, and brother of Esther (Brennan) and Marjory (Diamond).

He graduated from John Adams High School in 1947 and later earned an associate degree in accounting from Indiana University. Jack was a lifelong member of the Michiana area, residing at different times in Osceola, IN, Syracuse, IN, Union, MI, and also Mishawaka, IN, in addition to South Bend.

Jack retired in October 1989 after working 15 years with the South Bend Tribune. He came to the Tribune in October 1974 as chief accountant and was given the additional title of treasurer of the South Bend Tribune corporation in 1976. Jack was named controller and treasurer in 1982. While employed with the Tribune he performed the accounting responsibilities for the corporate reorganization of the South Bend Tribune Corporation into the South Bend Tribune Corporation and the separate broadcasting company of WSBT, Inc. Jack had a combined total of more than 35 years experience in the accounting field, having previously been the accounts receivable manager for Starcraft Corp. in Goshen, IN, and the office manager for Thunderbird-Avalon in Bristol, IN.

Those who knew him remembered Jack for his upstanding support of, devotion to, and love of his family and pet dogs. Jack was known for his good nature, humor, jokes, songs and undaunted positive attitude, along with his occasional Manhattan. In Jack's younger years he was an enthusiastic sportsman, eager to get out and fish every chance he got. Although hampered by limited mobility he carried his love of the outdoors and nature with him into his later years and came to appreciate wildflowers.

In September 1960, Jack married Norma Powell. Surviving are his son, Eric Michael of Mishawaka; stepdaughter, Marsha Worm of Cherry Valley, IL; three nieces, Janice Ruth of South Bend, Quintella Chaney of Plymouth, IN, and Sandra Casey of Waterford, MI; and a nephew, Dean Brenna of Las Vegas, NV.

As he liked to say, "Old fisherman never die, they just can't raise their rods." Jack passed away to the big fishing hole in the sky on Saturday, Sept. 8, where he now is enjoying the peace he deserves.

Visitation will be in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. There will be no services.

Memorial contributions in Jack's name may be made to the Nature Conservancy at 800-628-6860 or by mail to 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.
