Joan Rae Shafer

Joan R. Shafer, 69, residing on S. 35th Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, at her home.
Mrs. Shafer was the co-owner and manager of the Four Corners Restaurant in South Bend for several years.
She was born on April 8, 1929, in South Bend, to the late William E. and Susie B. (Schofield) Shephard. Mrs. Shafer had been a lifelong area resident of South Bend, and was born in the same home she currently resided. For the past eleven years, between the months of May and December, Mr. and Mrs. Shafer lived in the Upper Peninsula in Watersmeet, Mich.
On April 19, 1947, in Mishawaka, Ind., Joan married Richard T. Shafer, who survives. They had a wonderful marriage, and recently celebrated their 51 years of life together.
She is also survived by a daughter, Connie L. (John W.) Stratton of Mountainview, Calif.; a son, Richard T. (Chris) Shafer, Jr., of Mishawaka; and by five grandchildren, Rick Shafer, Megan Shafer and Michelle Shafer, all of Mishawaka, and Scott Curran and Lori Curran of Montainview, Calif.
Joan was a very active participant with the Marine Corps League, the Michiana Beagles Club, the Michiana Steel Headers Club, and the Club 15 Euchre Club. As a youth she attended Nuner Elementary School and John Adams High School. She has been a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 23, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Don Francis will officiate. Burial and graveside services will follow in Sumption Prairie Cemetery, South Bend.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Palmer Funeral Home.
