Scott W. Tenney - Class Of 1978 VIEW PROFILE

Scott W. Tenney

Scott W. Tenney

Jun. 26, 1960 - Aug. 28, 2005

Scott William Tenney, 45, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2005, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Scott was born in Chicago, IL, but he grew up in South Bend, Indiana. He attended Culver Military Academy and graduated from John Adams High School where he was a varsity swimmer. Scott joined the U.S. Army Reserves in 1979 and was honorably discharged in 1985 with the grade of Specialist E-4.

During this time-frame Scott attended Northwood Institute in West Baden, IN, and studied hotel/restaurant management. After moving to Santa Cruz, CA, he attended Cabrillo College and furthered his studies in the hospitality field. His career in culinary arts was very close to his heart. Because he enjoyed cooking and derived great pleasure in making people happy, he handled with ease his career in restaurant management. He also loved to cook and entertain in his own home, and would often treat friends to an eight-course meal.

Scott's great zest for life was evident in his many hobbies and interests. Pursuing his interest in large boat sailing, he purchased and lived on his first boat in the San Francisco Bay area in the mid-80s. He loved to mountain bike, backpack in the Sierras, and scuba dive in the Caribbean. He enjoyed working with his hands on wood projects or in the garden. Scott also had a passion for music, especially the Blues, and attended many live shows. A sports enthusiast, he was a fanatic fan of the Chicago Cubs. Never one to sit still, Scott was always planning his next adventure. Scott found it easy to keep a smile on his face because he loved deeply and was loved by many.

Scott returned to South Bend with his fiancé, Deborah Rupert, and they married in June 1990. Although they stayed in this area for a few years, their love for the West was too strong and they moved to Reno where Scott was a journeyman carpenter for several years.

When Scott turned 40, he and Debbie decided to move back aboard their dream sailboat in San Francisco. Three years into their new lifestyle, Scott's illness began to hamper their long-distance cruising activities. After two years of cancer treatment, they made the decision to move back to South Bend where they found love and support among their family and friends.

In addition to his dear friends, he is survived by his wife, Deborah of 15 years; his son, Jacob Crawford of Santa Cruz, CA; his father, Mark W. Tenney (Jane); his sister, Barbara "Beanie" Beach (Doug); William, his nephew and godchild; and his two nieces, Emily ("Sparkle") and Sarah ("Bug").

Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Delphine Furman Tenney.

Welsheimer's Funeral Home is handling arrangements. There will be no visitation. Please join the family in a memorial service celebrating Scott's life on Saturday, September 24, at 2:00 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. James, 117 N. Lafayette Boulevard, South Bend, IN.

Scott's family is honoring his request that donations be made in his memory to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
