Betty Murphy Goodwin passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on January 29, 2021. She was born on June 21, 1927 to the late Clarence and Ann Murphy in South Bend, IN

Betty was a lifetime resident of South Bend and graduated from John Adams High School.

Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In 1947 she married Jack Loughridge who preceded her in death. She married Harold (Hal) Goodwin who preceded her in death in 2016. She is also preceded in death by her grandson, Jeff Zakrowski.

She is survived by children, Tom Goodwin (Dee) of Laporte, IN, Greg Loughridge (Sue) of Chandler, AZ, Gary Loughridge (Kelly) of Mishawaka, IN, Gayle Burtsfield (Dale) of Beavercreek, OH, Jeff Goodwin (Lorna) of Fishers, IN, and Pat Goodwin of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Nicole Noto (Scott), Tyler Loughridge, Neil Loughridge, Taylor Goodwin, Lexie Goodwin, Ryan Burtsfield (Megan), Ashley Bergman (Dustin), Mason Goodwin, Holden Goodwin, Dan Goodwin, Nick Goodwin (Natalie), Joanna Flockenhaus (Steve), Madi Martin, Kailee Martin, Alli Scheetz (Jordan), Daniel Gutierrez, Anthony Gutierrez (Aloni), Jennifer Whitaker (Michael), Sara Fine (Brian), Jessica McKinney (Zach), and Sam Adams, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Betty was a musician from the age of 14. She played the trumpet professionally and belonged to Local #278 AF of M in South Bend, IN. She formed and had her own dance bands, and played and traveled with the “Musical Majorettes” who toured with the Cleveland Browns pro football team. She earned a music scholarship to IU. She often played and sang with bands at the local Elks Club. Needless to say, music was her true love.

Betty loved life, playing bridge, golfing, gambling at her favorite casinos, and playing her polka-cello to the famous ND victory march. If ND plays football in heaven Betty will be there tailgating, playing the polka-cello and cheering on her beloved Irish. She was a season ticket holder attending games for over 50 years.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Church and Altar Society, Ladies of the Elks Club, Christ Child Society, and Michiana Welcome Club.

Her family would like to thank the staff at the Village of Arborwood retirement for making her feel at home, especially during the trying times of Covid.

A special thanks to Ann for being not only a wonderful compassionate caretaker but a great friend. We felt God had sent our family an angel to help our Mom.
