OSCEOLA - Frances Avanell Seward, 93, of Osceola, IN, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at the Elkhart Hospice House in Elkhart, IN. She was born on June 30, 1917, in Mishawaka, IN, to Savilla May and Russell A. Kohler. Her grandparents, Ann and John Albert Kohler, came to Mishawaka in 1889 from Fayetteville, PA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, and by her husband, George B. Seward. They were married August 26, 1950. Also preceding in death was her brother, Paul G. Kohler. Frances is survived by cousins, Jane Rhinehart of Shippensburg, PA, Dorothy Trump of Edwardsburg, MI, Brock Bierman of Warwick, RI, David Kendall of Palmyra, PA, Roy Kohler of Mishawaka, IN, Charles Kohler of Niles, MI, Lawrence, Ernest and Charles Culp of Mishawaka, IN, Charles Kendall of Mount Vernon, IN; and her special friend and caregiver, Larry and Gail Snyder and family. Frances earned an A.B. degree from DePauw University, an M.S. degree in Education from Butler University, an M.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Notre Dame, completed graduate studies in Chemistry and Zoology at the University of Wisconsin, and did graduate work in German at Indiana University.

During World War II she was an American Red Cross First Aid Instructor. She has been of BARC (Butler Alumini Recruiting Corp.) for many years. She was a past district officer of United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Seward taught nine years at Battell School, four years at Fulmer School in Penn Township, two years at St. Joseph High School, DeKalb County, IN, 15 years at Clay High School, and five years at Adams High School. She was a member and past president of the Mishawaka Women's Club. She was a past president of G.F.W.C, Indiana Federation of Clubs. In 1962 she was a member of the State Committee that co-authored the Indiana High School Course of Study for Indiana Schools. In 1964 she was awarded a Certificate from the Foreign Language Institute for Indiana Secondary Schools German teachers. She was a member of the St. Joseph County Retired Educators Association and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

She was a volunteer for the retired senior Volunteer food program for 10 years. She was a member of the Advisory Council for the Foster Grandparent Program. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 p.m. in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, IN. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 26th, in the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, Elkhart, 22579 US 20 East, Elkhart, IN.
