MISHAWAKA - Eugene D. Barnes, 86, passed away at 11:07 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2010, in Hospice House of South Bend. Eugene was born on December 17, 1923, in Plymouth, IN, to the late Fidella (Brentell) and Jasper Barnes.

On February 23, 1952, in Hungarian Presbyterian Church, he married Wilma Gyori. He is survived by his loving wife, Wilma, and three children, Deborah Grimes of Elkhart, Jack Barnes of South Bend and Jeffery Barnes of Elkhart; and three grandchildren, Jeremy, Bryan and Kathleen Barnes. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Kryder of Granger and Mary Lou (Vern) Kryder of South Bend; and a sister-in-law, Marion Barnes of New Carlisle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Dean and Larry Barnes.

Eugene graduated from Adams High School before joining the military. He proudly served his country during WW II in the U.S. Army Air Corps and became discharged in 1945. He worked for many years at Circle Lumber Yard and retired in 1987.

He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, South Bend, and the American Legion Post 303. He will be remembered for his love of camping and NASCAR racing.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, June 28, 2010, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, with two hours of visitation prior to the services. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, with military honors. Memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1836 Portage, South Bend, or to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend.
