SOUTH BEND - James L. Bishop Sr., age 84, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 9:55 pm Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at St. Paul's Retirement Center of South Bend of natural causes. Jim was born July 29, 1923 in South Bend to the late Walter and Hazel (Seymour) Bishop.

On June 18, 1943, he married the former Ms. Jeanette E. Bates in Mishawaka, Indiana. Jeanette survives, along with their children Marcia Brown and her husband Steve of Mishawaka, Sherry Maurer and her husband Paul of Bremen, Indiana, Melanie Grossman and her companion Bryan Roush of Zionsville, Indiana and James Bishop Jr. of Johnsonville, Illinois. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Surviving as well is one sister, Lola (Phil) Layman of South Bend.

James was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Bishop and his sisters Catherine Sweet and Mary Sailor.

Friends may call two hours prior to the 1:30 PM funeral service Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, Indiana. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Jim attended John Adams High School in South Bend, and served his Country in the U.S. Army during W.W.II prior to his honorable discharge in 1947.

He was employed as a materials handler for Dodge Reliant (Rockwell) in Mishawaka for 28 years before his retirement at age 59. Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting and being outdoors. He was a lifetime member of the Bremen V.F.W. Post # 8972, and the Hillcrest Baptist Church of Mishawaka. In Jim's memory, donations may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
