SOUTH BEND - Robert F. Wittling, 82, of N. Edison Ave. South Bend, died Saturday September 1 at home surrounded by his family. He was born October 18, 1924 in South Bend to Joseph M. and Josephine (Majchrzak) Wittling who preceded him in death along with a daughter, Georgene Ison in 1989; a grandson, Ronald Ciesielski in 1994; and three brothers, Joseph, Harold and Christopher.

On July 13, 1962, in South Bend, he married Martha R. Sheridan who survives, along with four daughters Gisele Wittling (Mark Waite) of South Bend; Jeanine (Tom) Nolen of Norman, Oklahoma, Bernadette Wittling (Paul Vitale) and Roberta (Daniel) Biggs, both of South Bend; two sons: Gregory A. Wittling of South Bend and Paul (Donna) Riley of Jeffersonville, Ohio; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jeanette Johnson of Colorado, Mary Lou (John) Carusillo of Bristol, IN, Barbara (Robert) Robison and Dolores (Sonny) Tepe, both of South Bend; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert attended Adams High School then joined the Army in 1942, serving in the 449th Bomb Squadron, where he received the EAME Theater Ribbon with 4 bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and an Air medal with 2 Silver and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Technical Sergeant. After the war, he became an electrician, working for Morse Electric and retiring from Delta Star. He was a proud member of American Legion - Post 284 and IBEW local 153.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, in the HICKEY Funeral Home 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Deacon Ervin Kuspa of Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church presiding. Friends may call from noon until the time of services in the funeral home on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics c/o Logan Center 2505 E.
