Alfred J. Zubler

April 16, 1926 - Dec. 22, 2015

SOUTH BEND - Alfred Zubler, age 89, soft spoken, gentle, and most kind person, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Elkhart Hospice House. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Dessie (Turnbull) Zubler, sister-in-law, Cecelia Zubler; brother-in-law, Ray Leliaert; and niece, Mary Leliaert, Radar. Alfred was born April 16, 1926. He attended St. John elementary and John Adams High Schools. Alfred is an Army WW II veteran. After retuning from service, he attended Indiana University, Bloomington, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. He then taught a year in Fallon, Nevada, and 35 years with the South San Francisco Unified School District. There he was one of the founders of the School Personnel Credit Union and served as its first president. He was a member of the California Business Education Association.

Returning to South Bend in 1987 after retiring from the school district, Alfred became a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He joined the Queen of Peace Ministries, and volunteered at Memorial Hospital library. His hobby was line dancing and playing the organ which he became highly skilled at. IU Hoosier basketball continued to be his favorite sports team. He traveled extensively—Europe, Caribbean, South America and Far East.

Alfred is survived by his sister, Lois Zubler Leliaert; brothers, Glenn (Pat), Zubler, Chester Zubler; and loving nephews: Zublers: Michael (Linda), (Terry Cathy) Glenn Jr. (Kristin), Peter (Julie), Rev. Eric (Connie) Todd (Monica); Leliaerts: Raymond (Diane), Mark (Mindy), Christopher (Judy); nieces: Zubler: Aileen Viduha (Allan), Anne; Leliaerts: Karen Van Meter (Tom), Diane Webster, Martha Daufenbach (Tom, Dr.), Judy Kenney (John), Barbara Echard (Joseph).

Visitation will be on Sunday, Dec. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kaniewski Funeral Homes, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. The Rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, Dec. 28; funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, South Bend, and Mass will be presided by Fr. Daryl Rybicki. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery after the Mass.
