Rose Shulman

SOUTH BEND -The Temple BethEl Sisterhood will conduct a service at 8:15 p.m. May 14 to honor Rose Shulman, the widow of Albert Shulman, the Temple's first rabbi. Mrs. Shulman, 94, died March 13, 1999 in Plymouth Harbor, Fla. Mrs. Shulman was married to Rabbi Shulman for 73 years. He died Oct. 12, 1997, at the age of 95. Born on a farm outside Pittsburgh 11904, advanced Mrs. studies Shulman for was a pioneer in women.

She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Western Reserve University, a master's degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and did advanced study at New York University. While in New York, she was executive secretary for the national office of Hadassah. After moving here, she taught chemistry at John Adams High School. In addition, she directed the Religious School of Temple Beth-El here and served as the temple's office secretary for more than 30 years. She also was active in the interfaith movement in this area, beginning in 1940, and later served as chairman of the Women's Council of Human Relations.

She served on the boards of many local community groups, including the B'nai B'rith Women's Organization, Hadassah, the YWCA, the Urban League, Herring House, the Legal Aid Society, the American Association of University Women and the Progress Club. She also served as president of the Parent-Teacher Association at Thomas Jefferson School and of the South Bend-Mishawaka International Relations Council. In 1953, she received the first "Woman of the Year" award given by the Temple Beth-El Sisterhood. She received the National of Christians and Jews Brotherhood award in 1961. She served two terms on the national board of the Temple Sisterhoods, as president of the Indiana temple group, and in 1953 as chairman of the women's division of the United Jewish Appeal in Michiana.
