Robert L. McClure, 82, of Zepherhills, Fla. and Golfview Lane, South Bend, Ind. passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, in Hospice House of Brooksville, Fla. Robert was born to Edward G. and Minnie A. (Beyer) McClure on Oct. 11, 1922, in South Bend, Ind. He was married on Jan. 8, 1948, to Elma M. Busezky in St. Jude's Catholic Church. Elma preceded Robert in death in September 1994. One brother, Edward J. McClure, also preceded him in death in 1973.
Surviving are two brothers, William H. (Cyrille) McClure of Brooksville, Fla. and Donald G. (Norma Jean) McClure of South Bend; a sister, Ruth M. (Norman) Miller of South Bend and many nieces and nephews.
Robert lived most of his life in South Bend. He graduated from John Adams High School. He served as a member of the Military Police during World War II in the European front from March of 1942 through January of 1946. He worked for Studebaker Corporation as a bookkeeper until its closing. Robert also worked as a mechanic at Jordan Ford and as a sales representative for Dick's Paint Company. He was a faithful member of St. Jude's church for more than fifty years. Although Robert and Elma never had children, Bob devoted his spare time to the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Boy Scout leader for over twenty years. He spent many hours camping, canoeing, hunting and cooking in the wilderness with his Boy Scouts. Bob encouraged and guided eight scouts into becoming Eagle Scouts.
Two of those Eagles went on to become Scout Masters. Bob was honored in 1973 with the St. George emblem for dedicated service to the American Boy Scouts. Robert and Elma loved to travel together. They covered nearly every state in the United States and many friends through their travels.
Bob was a bowler and golfer. He and his wife enjoyed these hobbies together. Bob and Elma also enjoyed listening and dancing to almost any type of music, although "Big Band' music was their favorite. Bob was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. He was a charter member of Ave Maria Council of the Knights of Columbus. After Elma's death, golf became his passion. He would never tire of playing and constantly improving his game of golf. He often helped fellow golfers with tips on cutting their stokes. When Robert's vision started to fade, he still played golf.
He would rely on his golfing buddies to spot the ball for him. Their consistent reply was "Your ball is straight down the center of the fairway, like always." He was delighted to play many different courses around the country, since he was made an "Honorary Greenskeeper". Robert McClure will be missed by relatives who knew his kindness and generosity, his friends he kept of a lifetime, and his golf buddies in may different states of the U.S. for his knowledge, skill, and desire to constantly play his best golf game possible.
