Charles Treat Morse
February 8, 1938 ~ July 26, 2024
Charles T. Morse, 86, residing in Niles, MI, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, July 26, 2024. He was born February 8, 1938 in South Bend, IN to the late Franklin A. and Claire (Treat) Morse and remained a lifelong area resident of South Bend and Niles, while also wintering in the Florida Keys since 2001.
Charlie is a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger. He attended John Adams High School in South Bend for his freshman and sophomore years, then attended The Asheville School in Asheville, NC. He remained involved with both schools until his death. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. He was also involved with ROTC during his school years, six months on active duty and seven and a half years in the Army Reserves.
On August 22, 1959 in South Bend, Charlie married his high school sweetheart, the former Lynne Thomas, who preceded him in death on December 5, 2005. He was also preceded in death by daughter Sarah M. Garwood, and grandson Hugh T. Morse.
Charlie is survived by daughters Katharine T.M. McDonald (Micheal), of Baraga, MI; Elizabeth “Buffy” M. Lowenhar (Michael) of South Bend; son Charles “Chuck” T. Morse, II of FL; son-in-law, Eric F. Garwood (Joanna), of St.Petersburg, FL; grandchildren, Marie Morse (Lauren), of Bangor, ME; Clint Lowenhar of South Bend, IN; Maggie Lowenhar of Mesa, AZ; great grandsons, Davis and Alastair Morse; sister, Katharine “Kitty” Duncan of Oklahoma. Charlie is also survived by former long time companion of 18 years, Sandra Beyrer of Carmel, IN.
Charlie was a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). He began is financial career on July 1,1960 with Northwestern Mutual Life Co., and remained there for 55 years until his retirement in 2015.
While at NML, Charlie served as president / director of NAIFA of Michiana, Society of Financial Services Professionals, Michiana Estate Planning Council, Inc., National Association of Life Underwriters, NML Association of Agents, Advanced Planning meetings, seminars and institutes. He was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table, recipient of NQA and NSAA from 1965 to present and was South Bend Life Insurance Man of the Year in 1976.
Locally, Charlie’s service includes past president of Indiana Club, Economics Club of Southwest Michigan, South Bend Country Club, Duck Key Property Owners Association, Junto Goose and Duck Club, Club for Growth. Served on many boards, including: Heritage Foundation, Firefly Festival, Memorial Hospital Board, trustee with Memorial Health Systems, Inc.; South Bend Jaycees, American Lung Association, Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, South Bend Symphony Orchestra, United Way, Channel 34 Public Television, Century Center Fund Drive. Charlie guest lectured for the Indiana Tax Institute, Regional Estate Planning Councils and was one of the founders of the University of Notre Dame Annual Estate Planning Institute,
where he also guest lectured.
