Devon Bates, 42, of Swampscott, Mass., a former teacher at John Adams High School, was killed in an auto accident near Hanover, N.H., on Saturday. Bates was born March 17, 1936, in South Bend.
He was a graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, and taught at John Adams High School until 1961. Bates was chief evaluator for the community services administration in the New England division of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
Surviving is his mother, Mrs. Dorothea A. Bates of Swampscott, Mass.
A memorial service was held today in King's Chapel, Boston. Graveside services will be held Friday in Franklin Grove, Ill. at the family plot. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice
