Michael was born November 26, 1946 to parents Edward and Gertrude (Gorski) Wettergren in South Bend, Indiana. He passed away on May 16, 2026 at the age of 79.

He graduated from John Adams High School in 1964.

Michael was a sports enthusiast, a dedicated Chicago Bears and Notre Dame football fan. He took immense joy and pride with yard work and tending to the flowers, his favorites blooming in red and white. Michael’s relaxation was sitting on the front porch in the evenings with a cigar in hand.

After 32 years of dedicated service, he retired from the St. Joe County Police Department.

Michael is survived by his life long partner of 40 years, Phyllis Richard; his children, Michael A. Wettergren, Christopher (Shanna) Wettergren, Stephan (Brenda) Wettergren, and Sonya (Eric) Swiatkowski; extended children, John Richard; sisters Mary Ann McKenzie and Margaret Smith; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and extended children Michael Richard and TIm Richard.

A Rosary service will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. at Hahn’s Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka, with Father Chris Lapp followed by the visitation from 4:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. A Mass Service will be held the following day on May 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 220 W 4th St, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
