SOUTH BEND - Charles Edward Krug passed away on July 31, 2021, at age 90. He was a devoted husband, dad, brother, uncle and friend, who always shared a smile and kind words with others. Charlie was born on January 19, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, joining his parents Edward Wilhelm Krug and Mattie Lena (Burks) and his six older siblings, Jack, Martha, Virginia, Dorothy, Betty and Robert.
He graduated from Adams High School in 1949 and was drafted to serve in the U.S. armed forces.
Charlie received an honorable discharge in 1952 due to hearing loss, a disability he lived with the majority of his life. He went on to obtain a B.A. in sociology from Bethel College. Charlie married the love of his life, Penny Joy Miller, on January 11, 1975. A hard worker, Charlie held positions at Studebakers, Convair and Cubics in San Diego, California, and General Liquors before he opened his own painting business.
Charlie loved to travel. He visited 47 countries and every state except Alaska. He also participated in nearly 20 mission trips. Two of his favorite experiences were visiting a leprosy hospital in Ecuador and working at the Ankaase Methodist Hospital in Ghana, Africa. He also enjoyed Notre Dame football, collecting stamps and telling corny jokes.
A lifelong Christian, Charlie was baptized at Broadway Evangelical Church in 1945 and was a member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church. Charlie is survived by his wife Penny, his daughters—Rebekah Krug and Lisa (Doug) Ramage, his brother Robert William Krug, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings, Jack Raymond Krug, Bette Anne Dyas, Martha Louise Radanovich, Virginia Lee DeSonia and Dorothy Joan Fox.
A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on August 7 at Evangel Heights United Methodist Church (114 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend). Visitation will start at 11 a.m. followed by a service at noon. Family and friends are invited. Charlie donated his remains to the I.U. School of Medicine Anatomical Education Program. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Evangel Heights UMC
