Winifred Jaqua (Wulf)

Winifred "Winnie" Jaqua Wulf

Jun. 23, 1924 - Nov. 29, 2012

SOUTH BEND - Winnie was born on June 23, 1924, to Leonard and Irene (Acs) Jaqua in South Bend, Indiana.

As a senior at John Adams High School, she was assigned to the American National Bank & Trust Co. through a work-study program. Upon graduation, she was offered a job at the bank which she accepted eagerly. Her father had enrolled her at St. Mary's College twice, but she had already chosen her life's work.

On May 14, 1953, she married Edward H. Wulf. Their romance had blossomed when Ed was the policeman at the corner of Michigan and Washington streets. They often would run across the street to the corner restaurant to share her coffee break. Winnie continued to thrive at the bank. Ed completed his studies at the University of Notre Dame and was employed by Bendix. Theirs was a happy and devoted union until Ed's sudden death on Valentine's Day 1969.

In 1970, Winnie was appointed as a vice-president of the bank. She was the first female bank vice-president in South Bend and as such opened the door locally for many women to the industry. She served as the manager of the main branch of what became Valley American Bank. During her career, Winnie was well-known and respected by those she served. Oftentimes, customers would wait so they could deal with her directly. Winnie retired from the career she loved to devote her full time and attention to care for her ailing mother. After her mother's death, Winnie pursued her enjoyment of the buying and selling of antiques, often at her booth at the Thieves Market, along with her love of Notre Dame football.

Winnie is survived by her two loving friends, Kathy Herron and longtime friend, Enid Fisher. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St.

Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Friends may visit one hour prior to the services on Friday. Friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
