Edmund Joseph "Ed" Gember, 81, of Bloomington, died Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at Beverly Health Care after a brief illness.

He was born July 4, 1923, in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Blasé "Bob" and Angela (Chmara) Gember. He was a retired assistant mailroom foreman with the Herald-Times and previously worked for the South Bend Tribune. He worked a total of 41 years with the Schurz family, the owner of several newspapers, including the Herald-Times. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Center, the South Bend Press Club, and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Henry T. Allen.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Christine R. Gember of South Bend, Maria J. and Wayne Mitchell of St. Louis, MO, and Paula J. and Dwayne D. Young of St. Louis, MO; four sons, Gregory N. Gember, Guy J. Gember and Ned G. Gember, all of Bloomington, and Jon J. Gember of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Andrea M. Mitchell, Lauren R. Young, Brian G. Young and Kelsey E. Young, all of St. Louis, MO; and one sister, Jane Marz of South Bend, IN.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane (Brosk) Gember in 1985; his daughter, Melanie Gember in 1964; his second wife, Gertrude (Parks) Gember in 1997; and one sister, Monica Gember.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at St. Paul's Catholic Center in Bloomington, with Father Dan Adkins officiating. Entombment will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens where the Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Friends may call at Allen Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m., where parish Prayer Services will be given at 7:30 p.m.
