Roger Earl Pickett - Class Of 1948 VIEW PROFILE

Roger Earl Pickett

Roger Earl Pickett

Mar. 2, 1929 - Mar. 2, 2006

Roger "Roge" Pickett, 77, died unexpectedly at home on March 2, 2006.

Roge was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on March 2, 1929, to Earl and Mildred Pickett, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen Garner Pickett; a daughter, Jan Kellie Pickett; a grandson, Marshall Pickett (Justine); and a great-granddaughter, Jaedin. He is also survived by sisters, Barbara Brohman, Ruth Jewett, Marilyn Whitlow and Shirley (Jim) Hammond; and a brother, Bernard (Cindy).

Roge served in the Navy during the Korean War and avidly followed his grandson's career in the Navy, never tiring in comparing today's Navy with that of 50 years ago. Following his discharge from the Navy, Roge owned and operated a service station in Clay township for 37 years. He then worked for Corvilla for an additional 10 years. Following a second retirement, Roge volunteered for many church and community projects. Over the years he has actively supported Camp Milhouse, Clay Township Lions, Christmas in April, American Legion Post 303, South Bend Press Club, and many little league baseball and bowling teams. He was an avid sports fan, particularly baseball and college basketball. His first love was baseball, dating back to the early 40s when he used to listen to radio broadcasts with his mother. He loved to travel, the West, New England and especially to baseball's spring training camps in Florida.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 17, at 11 a.m. in Evangel Heights United Methodist Church in South Bend with his good friend, the Rev Pat Somers, officiating. A time of fellowship and sharing will follow the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church: Evangel Heights UMC, 114 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN 46615; to Corvilla, Inc., 3231 Sugar Maple Drive, South Bend, IN 46628; or to the charity of donor's choice.
